4. Becoming Aware That I'm A Role Model in the Community: Celebrate Service Day

This past year, I participated in Celebrate Service Day on September 24th, 2008. Along with the rest of my floormates on Yoder 2nd, I traveled to Oaklawn to do some mulching and weeding. As a sophomore, I was not required to participate, but felt like spending the day doing something productive and helpful. It was a good opportunity to get to know some of my floormates in a new, more casual setting as well as the new choral director who came with us, Scott Hochstetler.

I spent the day mulching and weeding and by the end, it looked a lot better than it had! It's always good to see tangible results of your work. This is a concept that we talked about in Foundations of Education. A proponent of motivation to do work is getting feedback. For example, shooting hoops in basketball. The player gets instant feedback: the ball goes in or doesn't. Oaklawn greatly appreciated our work and fed us at the conclusion.

I plan on doing Celebrate Service Day for the rest of my college career. It's great to feel like a part of something bigger with your friends and other GC students. I've enjoyed this way of being part of the community. I'm not in this picture, but this is what I was doing for Celebrate Service day at Oaklawn:
